To be honest, he is currently my party member I'm the most unsure about myself. My 4th member is Fane, who I made into a Pyro/Geo attack mage with Necro spider summoning and party buffing on top. My only close up melee character is my backstabbing Sebille (who is absolutely awesome, as mentioned). Walk into the wrong area and look at someone funny, get wracked. It is very much like the first game, which also was heavily level gated. With my Lohse I went down the magic/intelligence route and made her a buffer and tool mage, but you can easily make your summoner a melee fighter for example.

Since summoning doesn't scale of any specific attribute, your are basically free to shape your summoner into what ever else you like. Put all your points into the summoning skill until you reach at least level 10 – the power of your summoned demon increases greatly at that point. Not only can summoned pets do lots of damage, but just as a simple distraction and exta body in your party they are incredibly helpful.
The last thing I would very much recommend is Summoning, This skill is, just like in the first game – maybe even more so, very op. Also I would recommend giving her a bit Polymorph for Chicken Claw, Flight, Chameleon and Spider Legs. Give her just enough Scoundrel for all the important basic skills, specifically the Back Dash and the "teleport". Give her all the knock down skills from this school. With her Flesh Sacrifice and Adrenaline she can do lots of stuff and cover long distances in her round, if she has to. Do it! Definitely give her the Pawn ability and Opportunist. Always use, craft and buy lots of special arrows – especially knock down arrows – but also charm and magical damage arrows, so you can attack magic armour with your huntsman as well. I suggest to use crossbows and levelling Warfare, Huntsmen and Ranged in that order. Huntsmen are absolutely devastating and highly recommended wrecking machines.
